Why not make the day you head from Narita Airport to your hotel in Tokyo not just a transfer, but your first day walking around the city? If you have the time and energy, you can plan to stop by Narita, eat some eel, and then head on to Tokyo.
This plan uses a route with a stop at Keisei Narita Station. It does not aim for the fastest journey to your hotel or the lowest fare. Decide whether to make the stop once you have finished the airport procedures and know how much time remains.

Choose a train that passes through your destination station instead of the airport express
Keisei's airport access has two different routes: Keisei Main Line and Narita Sky Access Line. Keisei Narita is a station at Keisei Main Line, which is different from Narita Yukawa at Narita Sky Access Line. Check your destination on the route map, check the train stops, and board the train.1
Instead of thinking, ``I can get to Narita with anything on Keisei,'' you can share your goals by saying ``I want to get off at Keisei Narita'' at the information center or ticket counter. If you are going by JR, you will be taking a different route to JR Narita, so be sure not to mix up your ticket and boarding information.2
"Stopover" in this article is a detour in everyday language. This does not mean that you can freely go in and out of the ticket gates with the purchased ticket, or that you can ride to Tokyo without paying any additional fees. First, tell them the route you will take to Narita, then to the hotel, and confirm the ticket you will use and the payment method.
Check three conditions before heading out to the streets of Narita
The first is the time of arrival. It is based on the time when you can leave customs and move freely, not the time when the plane lands. The second thing is luggage. Rather than assuming that you have a place to leave your suitcase, think about whether you will be able to take it for a walk that day. The third one is scheduled for Tokyo.
Keep the option of skipping the stopover, depending on hotel check-in, other reservations and how tired your group feels. This is not an itinerary for the time between connecting flights. If you need to board another international flight, do not use this guide alone to judge whether you have enough time to return to the airport.

A meal candidate is Kawatoyo main restaurant near Omotesando on Naritasan.
Kawatoyo main restaurant is at 386 Nakamachi, Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. Official guides give walking times of 11 or 12 minutes from JR Narita or Keisei Narita Station. This guide allows roughly 10–15 minutes for walking without getting lost, with extra time for photographs and shopping.34
You can combine the meal with a walk towards Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, but avoid arriving at the restaurant too late. Check the temple's official access guide as well. Decide whether to visit the temple or eat first according to the restaurant's arrangements that day and the time you have left.5
The main store's regular guidance is last orders from 10:00 to 17:00. It is not suitable for planning to eat after arriving at the airport in the evening. Please check the latest information before departure for any temporary changes or the status of reception on the day.6
At Kawatoyo main restaurant, check the numbered ticket and accounting flow.
In the official FAQ, the guidance is based on the order of arrival, rather than the method of accepting reservations for small groups. Numbered tickets are used to manage the order of entry when the store is crowded, and are not reserved for a specific time. Avoid deciding how many minutes it will take you to get there and then booking the train right after that.6
Ordering and payment vary depending on the floor you are guided to. You will be instructed to order and pay first on the 1st floor and receive your meal ticket, and then on the 2nd floor you will pay after your meal. Don't just follow the movements of other customers; follow the flow that guides you.6
Payment is by cash and PayPay, and credit cards cannot be used. The Kawatoyo store at the airport has different payment terms, so don't assume you can use your card at the main store just because the name is the same.67

Decide on one dish to eat and leave some free time.
For a first visit, consider a meal with rice, such as unaju, and check the current price and portion size on the restaurant menu. Reading the unagi dish-name guide beforehand can help you decide what to ask when ordering.
If you have time and energy after eating, explore the temple approach or Naritasan. If you have already finished your walk, return to the station. Keeping both options open means a longer wait need not lead to a rushed afternoon.
Choose the train heading to Tokyo based on your accommodation location.
After getting off at Narita, which train you take to Tokyo will depend on the station closest to your hotel. Please do not treat Ueno, Shinjuku, Asakusa, etc. as the same arrival station, but check the transfer information for that day from Keisei Narita to your accommodation. Destination and transfers vary depending on the train, so don't promise a direct connection just by looking at the route map.1
After your first walk and meal in Japan, the journey to Tokyo becomes part of the experience. If you are tired, choose a meal at the airport instead. Treat Narita as a flexible stopover, rather than a fixed commitment.
