Clams take centre stage at Takaraya in Kisarazu: lunch at a port-town restaurant founded in the Meiji era

A Japanese way of eating the sea, not just sushi and sashimi. Enjoy fried clams, skewers, rice, and miso soup in one lunch.

Try choosing a meal while traveling based on the name of the dish. "If I go to Kisarazu, I want to eat clams." Takaraya is about a 3-minute walk from the west exit of Kisarazu Station. [1]

Founded in 1897. Although this Japanese restaurant has been around for a long time, there is no need to order a large Kaiseki course on your first visit. At lunchtime, there are gozen and rice bowl menus, so you can experience the restaurant's cuisine from just one meal. [2][3]

First order is "Clam Gozen"

If you are visiting Takaraya for the first time, try the famous clam gozen. The official lunch menu is 2,400 yen (tax included) and includes a choice of main dish from fried clams, skewered clams, sashimi, and tempura. [3]

On days when you want to eat clams as the main ingredient, choose kakiage or kushiage. In the prefecture's tourist information, it is introduced as a gozen that combines rice with clams and miso soup with clams. The structure allows you to enjoy the same ingredient in different dishes without having to order multiple individual items. [1]

``Gozen'' is a word used as a guide when choosing a meal that includes rice, soup, and side dishes. Rather than trying to find the correct answer to which one to eat first, try using your chopsticks at your own pace, taking a bite of the main dish, a little rice, and a break with soup.

Learn about seafood through fried foods and rice

When some people hear about eating seafood in Japan, they may think of raw fish. At Takaraya, cooked dishes such as fried clams, steamed clams, and clam curry are also on the official menu. [3]

Looking for expensive ingredients isn't the only thing you want to enjoy at this store. How to make small shellfish the centerpiece of a dish, and how to eat the same ingredients in different ways. Lunch becomes a little more interesting when you look at that combination.

Choosing a different main dish with your companion will give you an opportunity to talk about what caught your eye and how you liked it. Don't just take photos of the dishes, but also ``why you chose them'' as a memory of your trip.

After eating, head to the port

If you want to incorporate Takaraya into your Kisarazu walk, we recommend having lunch first after arriving at the station. If you eat near the station and then walk to the port, you don't have to worry about the lunchtime opening hours and end your walk.

Official lunch hours are 11:30-13:30 on weekdays and 11:30-14:00 on weekends and holidays. Don't think of it as a place where you can grab lunch until late in the afternoon, but plan ahead for lunch. [2]

Once you're full, it's time to head to the sea. If you have one purpose: ``I came to eat clams today,'' walking around the city before and after that purpose is no longer just a simple trip.
